Spanish, also one of the Romance languages, is part of the Italic subfamily of Indo-European languages. With Spain as its country of origin, Spanish consists of the 2 major dialects, Andalusian and Castilian. As the Spanish Empire grew between the 15th and 19th centuries, the language would spread worldwide. From America and the shores of the East Indies to Africa and Asia, Spanish was adopted in International commerce, trade, and as a viable language within the Catholic church. Today, the largest number of Spanish speaking peoples are found in Mexico, and over 400 million speak it as a native language. It is also the second, and in some parts, third most spoken language in the world. Spanish is the predominant language in Latin America, and is one of the more popular languages, currently being adopted as a second language throughout the world.
