Russian, the most widely spoken of the Slavic languages, is also the largest native language in Europe. It is heavily spoken throughout Eurasia as well, and is considered one of the six official languages of the UN. Its origin dates back to the 10th century, coinciding with the rise of three Slavic language groups. The Eastern, Southern, and Western Slavic groups all intertwined with one another, and borrowed heavily from the Greek alphabet. Russian, derived from Old Slavonic, came into fruition as a written language during the 18th century. This form, known as The Middle Style, combined elements of East and Church Slavonic, to form the basis of modern Russian. Based on the Moscow dialect, Standard Russian became the norm, as well as the official dialect and language of the land today.
