Japanese is spoken by over 130 million within Japan, and in Japanese communities worldwide. The written form utilizes three different scripts, Kanji, Hiragana, and Katakana. These scripts are based on Chinese characters, whereas the Latin alphabet is used in modern Japanese, for advertising and computer text. The language borrows heavily from Chinese, English, Portuguese, and Dutch. The fusion of Chinese characters into Japanese script dates back some 1,500 years ago. It was also in the late 19th century, when Indo-European languages influenced Japanese, and many words were incorporated into the language. Japanese texts have played an integral part in worldwide culture, art, and fashion. During the mid-90’s, Japanese airbrush illustration was a very popular medium in the arts, and utilized both the Western and Traditional styles of Japanese writing.
